Xavier Prou conocido como Blek le Rat fue uno de los primeros artistas de graffiti en París y muchos lo consideran el creador del arte urbano pintado con plantillas (el esténcil).
En la década de los 70, Blek le Rat viajó a Nueva York y paseando por las calles vio por primera vez los graffitis: palabras gigantes marcadas en las paredes con diferentes colores y formas. En esta época, este tipo de expresión no había surgido en París, por ello y más le fue tan curioso que decidió quedarse un tiempo en la ciudad para averiguar más al respecto. Se dedicó a investigar sobre la arquitectura urbana y madurar su creatividad. Comenzó a hacer graffitis con esténciles, figuras como ratas, tanques de guerra, hombres corriendo y plátanos, lo que generó expectativa en las calles de París y Nueva York. En 1981, junto con su colega Gerard decidió pintar alrededor del Centre Georges Pompidou, lo que los llevó a exponerse casi por completo. Tiempo después, cuando dejó de colaborar con Gerard, decidió tomar el seudónimo Blek le Rat, posiblemente haciendo referencia al comic italiano Blek le Roc.
En el manifiesto sobre el esténcil, Blek menciona: "Intento exponer las mejores cosas de la vida mediante inesperadas imágenes que distraen y deleitan a los peatones, sacándolos de sus preocupaciones cotidianas. A pesar de las represalias por parte de la policía en contra del graffiti, continuaré asaltando las calles en la oscuridad y llevaré mi trabajo directamente a las calles como parte primordial de la evolución del arte".

Xavier Prou, known as Blek le Rat, is one of the first graffiti artists in Paris, and is considered the creator of stencil street art.
In the 70's, Blek le Rat travelled to New York and strolling through the streets he saw graffiti for the first time: enormous words marked in walls with different colors and shapes. At the time, these kind of manifestations had not yet come to Paris, and this is why he was fascinated by it and decided to stay for a while and investigate what people intended with graffiti. He dedicated himself to investigating urban architecture and mature his creativity. He started to do graffiti with stencil, rat-like figures, war tanks, running men and bananas, which generated expectation in the streets of Paris and New York. In 1981, along with his colleague Gerard, he decided to paint the surroundings of Centre Georges Pompidou, exposing them almost completely. When he separated from Gerard, he decided to use the pseudonym Blek le Rat, which probably referes to Italian comic book Blek le Roc.
In the stencil manifest, Blek mentions: "I try to expose the best things in life through unexpected images that distract and amuse pedestrians, releasing them from their everyday worries. Despite police reprisal against graffiti, I will continue to go out when it is dark and take my work directly to the streets, as it is a fundamental part of the artistic evolution". Blek le Rat.
